Wyoming Medical Insurance Laws, Regulations & Policies
There are several Wyoming health insurance laws and regulations that are put in place to protect policyholders living in the state. Under state laws, Wyoming insurance providers must offer guaranteed renewable plans, which means they are not allowed to cancel coverage once you’re accepted in a plan if you get sick or are injured.
However, insurance companies in Wyoming will look at an applicant’s health status before accepting them into coverage. If a resident is turned down for coverage because of a pre-existing health condition or other health reason, they can still buy a plan in Wyoming’s high risk health insurance pool. However, it is important to note that these plans can be quite expensive.
Wyoming health insurance law also requires all health plans to provide coverage for these medical services:
- Screening for colorectal, prostate, breast, and cervical cancer
- Diabetes care
Some Wyoming residents are also protected under the federal law, HIPAA, if they recently left an employer’s group health plan and meet other requirements. HIPAA prohibits Wyoming insurance providers from denying or restricting coverage for eligible residents.

Wyoming Health Insurance High Risk Pool
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act established temporary national high risk pools to provide health insurance to those with pre-existing conditions. Residents in Wyoming with pre-existing conditions can get health insurance coverage through the state’s Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP). This works similar to regular Wyoming health insurance policies and requires enrollees to pay monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
Enrollees in the Wyoming PCIP pay around the same amount as people without pre-existing conditions pay for health insurance. The estimated premiums for Wyoming residents are $234 for ages 0 to 34; $280 for ages 35 to 44; $358 for ages 45 to 54; $498 for ages 55 and older. The plan has a $2,500 deductible that has to be met before health insurance benefits are covered. The out-of-pocket limit is set at $5,950 for a year. Those residents who are eligible for the plan will then have access to health insurance coverage for prescription drugs, doctor and hospital visits, emergency services, and more.
Individuals may apply for the Wyoming PCIP program is they are a United States’ citizen, have not have insurance for six months, and have an existing medical condition. For more information on the Wyoming health insurance high risk pools visit http://HealthCare.gov.
