SHOULD YOU SHOP ON LINE FOR HEALTH INSURANCE?
There aren’t many things we don’t buy online these days. Yet, for most people, turning to the internet to purchase health insurance is a foreign concept. That’s about to change. A central feature of the Affordable Care Act is to build online markets where millions of people who don’t get health benefits at work will shop for and buy a health plan, as well as learn if they qualify for federal tax subsidies to help pay for the cost of coverage. These markets, called health insurance exchanges, are slated to be up and running in every state across the country starting in October of 2013. A survey of more than 1,800 adults conducted by Enroll America, a nonprofit created to educate the public about health reform, found that 78% of people who will be newly eligible for insurance coverage because of the law in 2014 don’t know a thing about the new health insurance exchanges. What’s more, most people indicated they wouldn’t be comfortable going online to search for a health insurance plan – 75% said they prefer to be helped in person. This doesn’t bode well for a law that relies on internet-based markets to get people signed onto …

STI counseling, and HIV screening and counseling: Sexually-active women will have access to annual counseling on HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These sessions have been shown to reduce risky behavior in patients, yet only 28% of women aged 18 to 44 years reported that they had discussed STIs with a doctor or nurse. In addition, women are at increased risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. From 1999 to 2003, the CDC reported …

Here is a sample to get you started to a healthy new year and a healthy new you! 1. The cheapest health insurance is the best. The cheapest policy does not mean that it is the best option for your health care needs. It’s better to find a policy that is good for your budget and health care needs. 2. Obama-care made health insurance free. Health care reform will expand a program in every state to include adults with or without children. But it does not mean that reform makes health insurance free. The state that you live in will help mandate the cost of the coverage. 3. I should drop my health insurance because I haven’t been sick in a long time. Many people may think they’ll save money by dropping their health insurance because they haven’t used it in a long time. Unfortunately, that could end up costing you more money if you become sick and they could later be denied health insurance if they do suffer from an …

Sharing prescriptions may seem like a great way to save money, but that can actually cause more damage than good. When a family member has leftover medication from a similar ailment, it can be tempting to skip the doctor and use the leftovers. But everyone reacts differently to medicine and certain medications don’t mix well. If you take medication without a doctor’s supervision, you can risk serious mishaps. A bad reaction can cause permanent damage to your body. Rather than taking the risk, it’s best to go to the doctor and get a prescription that’s specifically tailored to you.
